Upgrades to the XXIX

The poor XXIX has been getting beat up this summer. I have added a few upgrades to help her survive the rest of the season.

  • Reba Race 29er Fork 80mm. My wrists thank me.
  • New (used) 29er wheelset - I slightly bent the last wheelset after a fall at Leb.
  • Surly 17t and 20t cogs and SS kit.
  • Picked up some Crank Bro. 5050xx pedals for cruising around town and the Urban Assault ride.
  • Soon to come a new Race Face Evolve XC SS crankset. The stock Truvativ crankset didn't even last half a season.

MORBID MEAT UP

Excellent turn out last night. We had close to 30 people show up as MORBID took over Panino Brothers in Apple Valley. If you are back in the neighborhood check out Panino Brothers again and try some of their Panino's, extremely tasty.

You can find pictures from last nights festivities HERE.

Fixie Fixation

I've taken to playing a lot of bicycle polo and spending a lot of time at the local bicycle co-op. The culmination of these two habits is what you see below, my Schwinn Mesa Runner fixed gear bicycle. It's geared at 2:1 which works decently for semi-quick starts and stops while playing polo yet still allows me to commute to and from the game without having to pedal a million cranks.

I'm considering taking a dremel tool to the large chainring in front for aesthetics. Thoughts, comments? Let's see your fixed gear bikes.

Park Tool-o-rings

parktool-o-rings

Today I learned my name was Pete Ryan-o-rings...

So I am working on the Karate Monkey last weekend making sure everything is tight and ready to ride when I grab my 6mm Park Tool hex wrench and the super spin speed screw part falls onto the floor. It is a piece that fits around the hex wrench and makes it really easy to hold onto the hex wrench and spin it. Well I found that the bottom o-ring cracked and fell onto the floor. I had this problem with one of the other hex wrenches before but was too lazy to do anything about it.

Well I remembered to actually email Park Tool Thursday about 10am. Well they emailed me back 5 minutes later and asked for my mailing address. Sent, bam. They are in my mailbox Saturday on on the wrenches a few minutes later. Looks like they sent me an entire replacement kit. Sweet! Thanks Park!

I own many of their tools and have had a spoke tool replaced by them in the past after I beat the hell out of it and it broke, I explained this to them and they happily replaced it with a new one. Park Tool is my choice for working on my bike and if you are looking for great tools or just want to learn to work on your bike check out their website @ parktool.com

Review: Planet Bike Superflash Stealth

Planet Bike Superflash Stealth

Link: Superflash Stealth

After getting my Surly CrossCheck I decided I needed a better rear flasher for commuting, beer running, grocery getting. I asked around and Scott mentioned he had the Superflash and really liked it. So I stopped by Hiawatha Cyclery on the way home from work one night and picked one up. Thanks Jim! Went home, ripped the packaging open and went to work. It comes with all sorts of mounting options and the clip on the back works great on a the back of your pants if you are riding another bike without the mount. I wound up attaching it to my seat post right below my seat. Easy in, easy out, easy on.

Test Ride:
So I tossed in in my bag and rode to Buster's on 28th. It was pretty bright out when I left the house and sat down at the bar. I took the light out of the bag to check it out a bit more. It is bright as hell in the daylight. I couldn't wait to see what it could do on the ride home. Fast forward through a few pints and I was set to go. Darkness. Check. Light attached, away we go. Holy hell, this light is bright. I could have used it for a headlight. No problems on the way home, cars went way around me and no one hit me. I consider that to be a good night since I have been hit twice now.

Ongoing:
I have been using it for a couple of months now biking back and forth to work, beer, etc. It has worked well in the rain, in the water(fell into a puddle x2), and every time I clicked it on. I have crashed once with it on and it did its thing and didn't rocket away from the bike like my old one use to do. No, it just stayed on and illuminated the trees above me while I tried to get out from under my bike and a 24pack in the pannier.

Other Info:
Although I haven't had to replace the batteries yet I it is pretty easy to open with a coin and Planet Bike has info on how to do it on their website.

$ and Where:

MSRP is $29.99 and you can find it online or at your local bike shop.
