MORBID Bierwagen – Part 1

So any project should start with some beer.  Luckily MikeyB dropped off some brand spanking new Steel Toe Brewing Provider.  A tasty little number and I am looking forward to drinking some more of their brews.  Nice to have another brewery in town.

So about this project, I have been thinking about getting a trailer to haul stuff around, usually what I want to haul is a cooler or goods from a trip to the liquor store or a grill or whatever.

Found a sweet old Burley for $15.oo.  Can’t beat that.  Picked it up and it was in awesome condition.  I doubt it had ever seen rain.  I really didn’t need something that looked that nice since I was just looking for a sturdy frame to build the Bierwagen up from.

I was able to undo most of the snaps pretty easily and took the rest of the fabric off with just a pliers and a socket wrench.  Twenty minutes of work later and one beer and I was done for the night.

I am working on a plan for the new deck and mods to the plastic fittings and possibly the tube that is not needed any more.  Mods may involve the Dremel and/or a hacksaw.

The tires look like they are in pretty good condition but not great.  I am planning on replacing them with a set of Maxxis Hookworms, new tubes probably wouldn’t hurt also.  Some dual rear blinky lights should finish it off in flat bed configuration.

I still need to measure the deck out to see what size cooler I can get to fit on there.  I would love to find an old metal Coleman cooler, if anyone has a line on one locally let me know.  Stay tuned for part 2.  -PR

  1. Stellar find on the Burley for only $15.00. These regularly sell for ten times that even in a used condition. I recently did a flatbed conversion with basically the same model of Burley. I used a piece of 3/4″ plywood as the base and then put 1″x4″ pieces of pine around the edge as a sort of low fence to keep crates from rubbing against the tires. A pic of it can be seen here:

I’m stoked to see how yours turns out. Keep your options open in the beginning in terms of how you attach bits to the trailer so that you can configure and re-configure your hauling options dependent on what the intended purpose of the hauling trip is.
